Q: Are you putting the controller or cells above the motor?
James Fleischman: Controller yes - cells are under the truck.

I get a sense of morose any time old iron bites the dust. They ain't making any more of the classics and pretty soon we'll all forget what it was like to have to use a choke and row through gears. :-/

Such a lack of people using their eyes... (n)

"What about steering/AC?!"

.047 seconds of looking at picture and those of us with functioning eyeballs can see an electric assist on the steering.

Pretty clean install though so far. Do have to agree with Dave, kinda cool, but equally kinda sad.

I think I've seen that electric assist steering gizmo used on Suzuki Samurai crawlers in recent years. Definitely good little assist boxes if they're able to do that!

There are companies that sell electric AC compressors for electric vehicles. It's a pretty common thing to add when converting an older vehicle to electric that has an AC system. There are some more advanced options with a baby heat pump that can work in either direction to provide both heat and cooling to the cabin in one package. A lot of the cheaper heater installs I've seen are just resistant elements.

One thing I wonder about the NetGain motors and similar is how waterproof they are. Like... what happens when I drive in the rain or do a deep water crossing? I remember some of the motors folks were using 5+ years ago were open to the elements. But folks using Leaf or Tesla motors have fully sealed units.

The brushes can get dirty and cause issues like an alternator but other than that they are pretty much waterproof.

Reminder I have basically this same truck I have not been able to work on but its 90% complete it just needs some wiring figured out and some batteries (which I have) so there's an open invitation to anyone who is interested or wants to wrench on an old EV Toyota and then we can drive it!
