Throttle control using a bicycle gear lever

Has anyone had experience in using a bicycle gear lever to control throttle / idle speed when climbing? I saw it used on a Jeep with manual transmission mounted on the stick.

Thanks

What you are describing is called a hand throttle. Common for crawlin with manuals and for folks with a disability that cant use their foot. Basically Grandpas crawl control.

Some of the Toyotas had a factory option, but not mounted directly on the gearshift. Its a knob that lets you set a minimum stop point for the throttle cable. I installed one in the 80 a few years back and love it. Around $50 for OEM if I recall.

The other benefit is increasing idle speed for heavy winch use to increase alternator output.

I want to get one for the 60.

Have an OEM one in the 60 and makes all the difference on technical, steep climbs and winching.

The really nice thing about the Toyota one is it has incremental teeth on the hand throttle shaft so as you pull it out to set it it clicks about every millimeter and spring locks in the throttle position you want and it won't release until you push it back in so no accidental loss of throttle.

Is the OEM 60 mounted on the gearshift? I need to look into one!

No, lower dash on the right side pf the steering wheel. I've not needed it in such a rush that mounting it on the gear shift would be necessary. Not to mention all the exposed cabling that would get snagged on crap.

Generally, like out in Moab, I see a really steep obstacle approaching I tend to throttle it up as I'm studying my line and then head on up so even if I let off the gas for some reason it's still maintaining the preset throttle position and once on top just push it back in for normal idle.

FJ62s have a manual throttle on the dash, as far as finding something OEM-ish.

There are a couple of oem versions for the 40 series. And my Stout has one too!

Some are under dash mounted and the cable runs to the pedal. Earlier versions have a dash mounted knob and the cable runs straight to the carb.

If you did something like that, I would use an old top tube 3-speed shifter as i presume that would be easier to use in the moment vs. the oem hand throttle on an 80..(you have to set rpm with gas pedal then lock in switch)

that said, I love the one in my 80 for winching and idling up so the york compressor can build air pressure faster.

Where can I buy one or should I just buy a bicycle lever (Hand Throttle) and mount it onto gearshift. I don't think it was an option for a '74 FJ40.
