Tacoma head room and seat height?

Today I sat in a half dozen different 2nd and 3rd gen tacos that had a range of available head room. Some I had at least an inch of clearance and others my head was jammed into the head liner. Has anyone seen a guide to find a taco with the most head room possible?

Here's what I found today:

  • 2013 access cab Prerunner manual seat auto transmission - plenty of headroom. Maybe 2 inches.
  • 2015 4 door Prerunner manual seat auto transmission - good headroom. Maybe an inch and a half.
  • 2018 4 door TRD Off Road manual seat 6 speed transmission- about an inch of head room
  • 2018 4 door TRD Sport manual seat auto transmission - zero head room. Head smashed up into the head liner. Couldn't sit upright.
  • 2019 4 door SR5 2wd manual seat auto transmission funky headliner that maybe was meant for a sunroof truck - head jammed into the headliner. Couldn't sit upright.
  • 2020 4 door SR5 2wd auto seat auto transmission - about an inch of headroom with the seat all the way to the floor
So I'm guessing the difference, other than the 2019 SR5 with the funky headliner, is the interior trim package?

FWIW, the 2018 TRD Pro had 20k miles on it and was listed at $39,900. Had some cosmetic damage to the right front area that had been repaired that showed on the Car Fax -- I couldn't find any evidence of what had happened and wouldn't have known had it not been for the Car Fax.

Did the trucks with no headroom have sunroofs?

Seems like a lot of people block lift the back mounts of tacoma seats to make the base more flat for comfort... which of course reduces headroom. Perhaps some of these tacomas you sat in were also modified? Mass of prior operators may also have an impact on foam consistency ;) .

Hmm that could be! Next time I go look at tacos, I'll check under the seats for lift blocks.

The seats all felt pretty uniform in terms of how much the foam under my butt had been compressed by previous owners. None of them were obviously trashed in that way.

Maybe Andy's thinking front? Some owners put brackets or blocks in to tilt the seats back to give leg support. They may have painted them black but it's usually pretty obvious being on the lip on the floor right behind your heels.

They will also sometimes put short blocks under all four corners to lift the whole seat.

Also it's not unheard of that people will customize their seats by having an upholstery shop shave or/and add foam.

I was sure it would be the sunroof, that reduced head room by at least an inch in my experience. But I only test drove 2nd gen Access Cabs so it's a pretty narrow range of configurations.

I mean front of front seats to increase the tilt of the bottom giving your hamstrings more support. I'm thinking of doing this but the crown my melon would hit the ceiling and I'd be looking at the top of the windshield. The problem is the rake is too steep, it's awkward.

Just jump seats at the back of my truck, essentially the same thing as what was in my 1991. The change was they flip forward to make a storage deck rather than back into the rear wall.

The 05+ Access Cab has a few things that make it seriously more betterer than the XtraCab. Suicide doors are ab fab and the jump seats making a perfect dog deck is another.

Lol! RisingSun BOD is trying to become a official partner of tinder I hear. Yeah, good luck fitting into a taco. Might start looking at 4runners and tundras.

I'm jammed into a 1st gen 4runner now which has just okay headroom. It would be hard losing the manual transmission. The only reason I'd want to do that is if I was going all electric... and we're still a little bit away from having an electric Land Cruiser. :(

Hey, wasn't that the CM committee and not the BOD Phil? :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

We know from your various public profiles that you're into some pretty weird stuff @DouglasVB ... maybe you could have your roof augmented to better suit your needs.

Someone needs to make a camper shell just for the cab. Sorta like some of the old VW busses got where it was a hard shell that raised the roof height. That would be very smart at least until a rollover accident 😂
