In keeping with my tradition of making last minute trips.....
My wife and kids are back on the East Coast for a family reunion. So, it's just me and the dog. We woke up Wednesday morning and she looked at me as if to say "You've got a few days off, we should pack
some gear and go fish in the San Juan's", I agreed, so that's what we did.

I packed some camping gear and all the necessities for 3 or 4 days alone in the hills. We ran some trails, fished, napped, hiked, and ate like camp kings. It rained a ton, so we spent some quality time
reading a few books and watching the rain fall. Truly one of the most scenic trips I've done. It was good for my soul to spend some time alone reflecting on the things that are so important to me. It made
me realize how much I miss my kids when they're not with me. I'm not used to camping without Keagan, and I thought of all the things he'd enjoy about this trip. Our annual family trip to Telluride is this fall,
so I'll get to show him soon.

It also made me realize how cleansing it is to just sit alone and watch a stream run, or the sun rise, or trout sip mayflies off the surface without someone assaulting them with every fly in their box.
I took some time to really look at all the wildflowers. I even stopped to smell a few. Although, they were so thick in some places that I didn't even need to bend down, their scent just filled the thin
air. I watched a doe and her fawn cross the Middle Fork of the Cimarron River without ever knowing I was there. For the first time in a while, I stopped and just listened to all the sounds around me.
Aspen leaves in the wind, birds, the river....

I completed the Rocky Mountain Grand Slam. Brook, Brown, Rainbow and Cutthroat trout all in the same trip, all on dry flies. I thanked each fish for giving me the opportunity as I released them.

Took some time to take some photos too....I should really invest in something better than the iPhone4s, but I did just discover you can take panoramas with it....

Between the Horned Larks, pikas and marmots, Libby was pointing in every direction. She doesn't wear down very easily, but there were sooo many birds nesting in the grass, she just couldn't stop...

I let her drive for a while too ;)

Owl Creek Pass, Rowdy Lake, Silver Jack Reservoir, East Fork(spotty because of the fire), West Fork and 2 alpine lakes just above 12,000ft that hold cutthroat trout........ I forgot their names ;). I did camp at one of them and I only brought my 40 degree bag, it got down to 36 and rained something fierce. My bag wasn't enough. Thankfully, Libby likes to sleep close and I made a little room for her in the sleeping bag.

All the rain caused some pretty major rock slides. The lake sits in a bowl surrounded by big peaks on 3 sides, and the sound of the slides echoed off the 13k+ walls like gun shots. It was LOUD  pretty amazing to see.

Great photos. Jealous of your trip! I worked in that area in '09 and haven't been able to get back down there since. Your 100 is looking good.

Very nice Stan, Dog looks like he had a good time too. Sometimes we all need that kind of time alone to realize what really matters to us in life.

Nice. Are those trails bike friendly as in big dual sport? Looks doable on Anakee IIIs. I'm itching to take on some scenery like that on the bike for a few days. :)

Absolutely doable on a dual sport. Especially Owl Creek Pass. Watch for deer though, I almost whacked a few including a MONSTER buck. There are some free range cattle up there too, so hitting one of those on a bike wouldn't be the most awesome thing ever done.

It's really pretty right now, but late September - early October is the best time to be there IMO.

Awesome. I'll have to go check some of those out soon. Thanks for sharing. :thumb:
