They sound weird. They are in my hood all the time.

Since late 2018/early 2019, EVs and hybrids have been mandated to have “AVAS” or acoustic vehicle alerting system that basically uses speakers to pump out artificial noise under 30kmh/18.6mph so pedestrians hear them at low speeds in lieu of engine noise. The Rivian built Amazon delivery van makes an obnoxious noise that to me sounds like a bad wheel bearing, but I noticed later on it’s actually the same acoustic sound they play in their Ram gasoline delivery vans instead of the proverbial “beep, beep, beep” in reverse. So as annoying as it is, it’s an Amazon and federal regulation thing rather than a Rivian thing - it’s just more pronounced on EVs since there is no other noise when driving at low speeds. Side note - they are REALLY fun to drive :)

I think the Honda CRV's in my neighborhood all sound like tie fighters leaving the space dock...

I see them at least every couple of weeks rolling down Windermere in front of my house at Cornerstone Park.

A few pages back on this thread I said my coworker/friend ordered a R1S about a year ago. He got the call today that it will be ready in a few weeks. He now is reconsidering going forward with the purchase since he just bought his wife a new bimmer hybrid. He asked me if I want it. Holy crap....I absolutely want it. His build sheet equals $76k which is a ton of dough for a guy like me. I'd have to sell some rigs to pull it off.

Talk me out of this please!

I'm glad you mentioned this Matt. I was under the impression that this was the case.

Funny you say that Tim! We just got Adria a 2023 CRV Sport Hybrid and I think it sounds so cool!

Unfortunately the reservation isn't transferrable, so he'd have to take delivery and pay tax on it and then sell to you which means the deal wouldn't be better than you can get on the open market. If you're interested in one, I'd set up a test drive at the Denver service center which doesn't have much of a wait now, then look on Bring a Trailer and Cars and Bids for one. They're trading in the mid $80k range now with a couple hundred miles which is usually less than ordering new unless the order placed prior to March 2022. If you buy one second hand, get a 2023 model built after February to get some safety improvements they made with the structure.

@SteveH, that's a pretty amazing repair. I honestly had no idea they could do that much repair under the "paintless dent removal" umbrella.

It's also probably not completely fair to single out Rivian here because other than the issue with removing the battery in an EV the rest of the $41k repair option wouldn't I think be any different with a gasoline unibody, like maybe a Honda Ridgeline or something in theory.

Maybe Rivian hasn't the design history a Honda (just example) does. I'm thinking Honda probably has considered repair so there's seams to make it easier or just accumulated bodyshop knowledge where they know the tricks.

What comes to mind, too, is a friend in high school got into a pretty serious wreck with his 1970 Ford Mach 1, which was similar in that the whole body, roof and rear quarters were one piece. Even in 1988 the skills to fix it were being lost. He had to find an old timer who knew how to do lead filler like they did in the 50s and 60s.

I think we have 4 Rivian's in the neighborhood now. 2 pickups and 2 SUVs. One guys is really mad at Wyoming for not having enough charging stations for him to tow his RV with it. If I have to hear him brag about being carbon neutral one more time, I'm gonna puke.

Did you ask him what his footprint was to manufacture his Rivian?

Last night I was chatting with some of the Rivian ladies running the Rebelle (mostly with a special projects engineer) about the suitability of adding a snow plow to one.

I’m gonna have to be watching for a cheap one someday just to do it.

High voltage linear actuators to run the plow, and there’s gotta be a good way to tie into the ladder frame….

🤔🤔
