Rust repair

Guys,

I am looking at buying an FJ40 that will mainly be a trail rig, but I want something original that I can possibly restore one day. Everything I have seen in my price range has plenty of rust. What is the best means of slowing/stopping/repairing rust on these rigs? I'm looking at one on CL right now that has this typical FJ40 issue. It is a 1979 and is mechanically perfect, just has cosmetic issues. You think $ 3,000 sounds fair?

That's not really repairable rust. That will need a new tub most likely. S0, figure $3000 for the rig then another $5000 - $10000 to make it look good.

There's a nice 74 in Boulder right now for $7900. This would be a better place to start in my opinion.

Yes, that is kinda what I am thinking. Probably too much rust. That one in Boulder does look nice...a little more than I am wanting to spend on one though.

I've seen people fix worse.. Kinda on the high end for the amount of rust IMHO. The rears you expect the front of the running boards indicate alot more. It's been for sale for a while now so you could probably haggle pretty well. On the plus side it looks very original, low miles and the late model like a 79 is very comfortable to drive vs the earlier ones and even the 75+ with the bucket seats.

Thanks, guys. I think I may pass on this one. It is also 200 miles from Denver, so logistics are a bit of a concern too. I'm gonna keep hitting CL and see if I can find the one...

Seems like too much money to me. If you could get it for $1500, it might be worth it.
