The water pump on my 1978 Canadian spec FJ45 is weeping out of the weep hole and thus isn't long for this world. I need to order a new one in, but since this is a non-USA spec rig, it doesn't have an oil cooler on the 2F and if I order one in for this model year it will have the extra port for the oil cooler. Thus, i will need to order in an earlier model year water pump, but am unsure what year the oil cooler first appeared on USA-spec 2Fs. I checked Rob Mullen's FAQ on Mud and he doesn't mention when oil cooler first appeared. I know my '71 does not have one, and my '76 does, so it has to be somewhere in between those years.

My Federal-spec '78 FJ40 does not have an oil cooler, but I was told years ago that Toyota discontinued the non-oil-cooler water pumps for a '78.

I see that Rock Auto carries an FJ40 and an FJ55 pump (Aisin for a '78) but both have oil cooler ports. If you go back to 1975, they don't list Aisin pumps at all. If you want (or can tolerate) a non-Aisin pump, there are many non-oil-cooler choices.

Perhaps you can get the pump you need through Partsouq?

I was thinking NAPA or Carquest. My shop is literally next door to a Carquest. Ever since Stevinson stopped letting us meet in their dealership and stopped giving us discounts I have soured on buying all my stuff through them. I wonder if I can learn what years had or didn't have the oil cooler through $OR?

HA! I should have checked $OR first they are specific about which month/year have and don't have the oil cooler port. The one I need is going to be 1/75-8/76 Federal spec. My 4/76 is CA spec and does have the oil cooler.

The Stevinson Parts Online discount beats what we used to get over the counter. It's legit.

I no longer give them preference now that we no longer get a better discount than Joe Schmoe and they won't host our meetings any more.

That's who I ordered from! However that's not the correct part for my application, I needed the 1/75-8/76 one W/O oil cooler and W/O fan clutch.
Ahhhh cool!

Did this a couple weeks ago...

Yikes! 45 years of corrosion. I ended up chasing these with a die.

The patient - it was a bit of a PITA working in the cramped space behind the radiator. I did remove the radiator bolts so i could get behind the fan shroud.

Kurt's crew came through, the new pump was identical to the old one. When I checked at Carquest, none of the ones in their system were particularly close.

As is usual for these things, it took a lot longer than expected, but after install, refilling and burping, it is working perfectly.
