A bit of a loaded question but, about how many hours might it take to wheel the whole thing? I jnow there's a huge fire and the utah side is closed. Im just fishing for info for a future trip

Wow! 166.4 miles. Looks pretty cool too. OnX trail reports range from some staying overnight 2 nights and another saying they cut off the last few miles and got it done in one day. It also says a lot of it is gravel roads, so I’m guessing your average speed would be relatively high.

I dont mean driving like baja1000 texas Wheelchairs (side by sides). Just regular human pace. I got plenty of lights for night driving

Took us two easy days. You could do it in one day if you didn’t want to look at scenery and just pound out the miles. Camping at or near Buckeye Reservoir is what I recommend. It’s a developed campground but VERY spread out. Feels like dispersed camping, but with pit toilets.

And yeah, it’s currently closed at some point on the Utah side due to the Deer Creek Fire. The fire looks to be blocking all possible exits from the Buckeye Res area. Maybe there’s a way directly down to Paradox from there but I don’t know. That may or may not be possible. If you wanted to continue on to Moab from Paradox, Highway 46 in Utah is closed so you’d have to take another creative detour. Probably not worth it.

My plan would be, once my small support trailer is built and the trail is completely open is to camp on the western side and do a marathon 1 run shoot with minimal stopping straight to Moab. Guys at work call me "the Animal" i might need to start a new Wheeling channel called Animal Overland. "If you want to join you got to be an Animal to keep up with me!" 😆.

Right now its the, Not So Secret Society of Single Sober Overlanders lol 😆

1-2 days from Montrose. Plenty to see and explore for a 2 day run. Great camping out of the heat up on Lasalle pass.
done it several times on both Adv Moto and FJ60.

We did this last year on our way to Moab for our wedding. Two days one night with very late starts each morning. Most of main way is standard dirt roads or access roads with sections or points you want to be low and not for very long. It’s absolutely worth doing.

We want to do this again and with three days two nights to explore some of the side roads. Specifically petroglyphs in Paradox Valley and the wild horses of disappointment valley. The rangers for RR are extremely responsive for any questions or suggestions as well. Bonus, ask them for stickers and they mail them directly to you.

It’s doable pending weather and it would be a long day. What’s the rush?

We had rain/snow our first day. Just outside Nucla it really started to come down hard making for a very slick drive with the bentonite. We started to encounter some flooding and forged some high streams. I would be hesitant to push through on some of the canyon sections on either side of the Dolores. We hit carpenter ridge in the late afternoon it overlooks Paradox Valley. While it had dried some it was still moist and extremely slick still and being pulled towards the edge on a narrow road was not something I enjoyed or would recommend.

My first time doing Rim Rocker was a scout trip before a media event. I was solo in a stock rental 4runner and planned to cover ground quickly stopping only to take pictures of points of interest and find a couple camp site locations. Even though I filled up in Montrose at 2:21pm according to my gas receipt, I was making great time and decided to see how far I could get before dark. Long story short, I ended up in Moab right at 10pm and left the McDonald's drive through at 10:17pm according to my receipt. I did the full route without bypasses or taking any pavement which could have shortened the drive time.

Now, I would have never done it that quickly if I had passengers or dogs with me, and no car is faster than a rental! I've done RR 4 or 5 times since then, and the more leisurely pace is a lot more fun.

Outstanding! Thats the data i was looking for. I'd be driving at a relatively leisurely pace.

Yarn, I'm not in a rush. More so just a personal goal.

little late to this thread.
Ive ran RR twice now and look forward to running it again one day. With(the 2nd trip) and without an offroad trailer. My trailer(M101a2 military trailer) was perfectly fine...but my buddies snapped the tongue. Granted after seeing the size tubing the person he bought it from used, were surprised it didnt happen earlier. It failed in the La salle's area when you turn left into a decently rocky section(more annoying than anything) where it does have signs stating trailers past here not recommended. We fixed it in about 2hrs with 2 hilifts, bailing wire, and a few 1" ratchet straps. It held.
**Just something to keep in mind to make sure not just your rig is up to the challenge of being in such a remote area, but also what you have in tow.**

Traveling at a decent pace and enjoying the drive/mornings at camp is a good 2-2.5 days. I would suggest you stay your first night at the ballpark campground in Uravan. Oh and make sure you get to Ace to fuel up before they close at 5pm. I did fill up my 80 at the Ace and still had to use my 5g jerry can maybe an hour outside of moab..

If youre moving quickly watch the mud. if its wet, only the top 1" or so is mud and its hard pack underneath. It also sent me off the road on my first trip to RR.

Great data here! Just an fyi be sure to check the status before going. The western half of the RR was closed during the deer creek fire, I reckon it’s started opening back up by now. But you may have to get creative.
