We left Denver on Saturday afternoon, arriving in Lusk, Wyo. after dark. At one point, we drove through a cloud of bugs so thick that Karie thought it was raining.

The hotel we stayed at had a sweet old Impala SS two-door parked outside. I'm guessing it belonged to someone who worked the front desk.

We arrived in SD on Sunday. Hot Springs is a neat old town. We spent most of the day at Evan's Plunge, which was too wet for pictures. The kids were fascinated by the old jail in town.

The Mammoth Site is a huge archaeological dig where a bunch of mammoths got trapped in a sinkhole. Amazing bones. It's a working site, although no one was working on a late Sunday afternoon.

On the way to Custer, we drove through Wind Cave National Park. There are signs warning drivers about buffalo. Soon enough, we came across one near the road. It was pretty dark, so I had to crank the ISO on my camera to get this cruddy shot. After the picture was taken, it walked up on the road in front of us. I passed it by within a few feet.

Matt, I cannot believe the front of your rig. That is amazing. That Impala is beautiful. A couple weeks ago I was up late on a weekend and was watching some auction on TV. It was incredible how many beautiful cars GM made in the 60s. Dozens of different models that will still look awesome in 200 years.

Guess it's just on my end but Matts pictures only load the top 1/3 for me. :( I refreshed several times with the exact same results everytime. I remember the last time we went to BHCC it was our return trip we hit the clouds of skeeters in Wyo. Got more bugs in 50 miles that we did the ENTIRE rest of the trip! Just shows ya how bad Wyo sucks....even pulled all the bugs up there!

I love Hot Springs, SD. Evan's Plunge is a blast (did you get across the rope swing?), and they have a GREAT 9-hole golf course in town! Looks like a good trip for the kids so far too!

matt, the 60 looked like that after a summer trip to tempe. the bug and tar remover that you buy just about anywhere really does help a ton.

Nice. We hit up the mamoth dig site lst summer. The kids liked the headphones the best. We also swam in the river at Hot Springs. We did Jewel Cave also, they put on a good tour of an amazing place.

Today was mainly about Mt. Rushmore. Pretty stunning sculpture, if you can still call it that.

What UB said, we did it on motorcycle and it was beatiful. Only problem was taking pictures, we would have to stop all the time get the canera out and click away. It was well worth it, a must do if you are in the area.

Great pics Matt and what a great family vacation!!

Crazy Horse doesn't look like it has changed much in the last 4-5 years...My thought when we too decided to drive by vs. pay the $$ to go see it was that if they charged a more reasonable amount of $$ to get in they might actually make a bit more progress...
