It was a pretty sweet day out on Kingston.
We had a total of 10 people and 7 trucks.
Another Jeep group had shown up to run up to Loch Lomond. I believe they had around 15 people. Spirits were high. Smokey the Bear made an appearence.
We were joined by FS Rangers Chris and Tessa in their Truck/Trailer/UTV. The plan was to start the trail from the St. Mary side and exit via Apex.
There was some construction on Nebraska Drive just before the start of Kingston Peak Rd. They had created a rather large pile of dirt that made the road impassable.
After Chris spoke with some of the worker gentleman they moved their dirt creating a bypass for high clearance 4x4 vehicles. The Forest Service's trailer/UTV was not quite up to the task. We split the team. Our FS detachment would run Kingston from Apex, and RS would continue on the St. Mary's side. We were given the gate key and the task to open the trail a few days early. Great success.
The trail was dry, the weather was beautiful, we did some sight seeing.
There are a few sections of the trail that still require our attention.
- The middle section between the Mailbox over look and James Peak TH is eroded worse than it's been on years past. We stacked some rocks, displaced some dirt and attempted to mend the main trail. The intent was to create a path of "less," resistance to keep motorists on the main trail instead of creating a bypass...

Given the extent of the washout, people have still found it more suitable to create a bypass. (This is dispite signage, and trail markers.)

Our next problem was with some Buck and Rail fencing closer to the Apex gate/side. There wasn't much we could do on this run. A good deal of the buck/rail needs to be repaired/replaced. We had a good chat with FS about some options. As a club, we have some pretty sweet opportunities for funding/grants. Now we have a better picture on how to get some of the logistics sorted out.

It was a great day with windy weather, and awesome people.
Thanks to all who came out, and put in some work. It was a good Saturday.
