I have been grouse hunting for years (as an adult) with a savage model 24 22/410 with great success! favorite gun I own hands down, the cruiser does not leave home without it. Best part about it is that there is still meat on the bone. I find 20 and 12 to be way to much gun for a small bird. I own and have owned many 24’s in many different caliber options. Also have a couple Springfield m6 scout (considering selling one) in 22/410.

As expected there's many different options given here, Are you set on buying new? If not check Armslist or pawn shops, I've found most of my guns at these type places also gunshows are good. I've had great luck getting a high quality Firearm, even setup with scope, sling, extras for what a new gun alone would cost. As far as Elk/Deer gun, I like 308, 30-06, 7mm mag, a common caliber with good knockdown power and bullet options. Good luck and shoot it lots before ya hunt to get dialed in to how it performs.
Whats up Mike! I ended up buying. Remington 700. Only regret is not getting a decent muzzle break on the barrel. Kicks like a mule!

Hey Bud, Excellent. I have one also, in .308 and it doesn't kick much. What caliber did you get it in and is it used? Mine is from 1971, it's the high grade model and perhaps the prettiest wood stock I own. I put a 6x24 quality scope and upgraded the trigger. I'm guessing you got a bigger caliber?

Add a LimbSaver recoil pad or better yet get the pre-fit LimbSaver and swap out the OEM pad. I can shoot my .30-06 all day after that little change.
