What a blast of a weekend!

I decide to make this a members only run after our good friend Bruce Miller passed away earlier in the year. Had a total of 9 vehicles for the run. It was fun to get back to where it all started- the Alpine Tunnel. Though the Alpine Tunnel was still closed from a rock slide in 20178- Ross Miller informed us that things are in the works to repair the Palisades:cool: .

A teaser pic for now (still going through all my pics).

We did a extra credit run over Napoleon Pass on Friday. Always a fun trail.

Thanks to all for making it such an enjoyable weekend!

GTR report part 1:

Yet another fun weekend Ghost Town Run. Had a good time with everyone, as always.

I drove out early Friday morning but got down towards Pitkin too late to join in on the Napoleon Pass run. So I did a little solo exploring around the area in places I’d never gone to before.

I came in over Black Sage pass and dropped in the back way to the camp site. I found my way up to Fairview Peak (and also Fairview Mine) and hiked up to the top to the old fire watch cabin. Amazing views from up there.

A group of volunteers had apparently rebuilt some stuff about 10-12 years ago. New roof, door, windows, etc.

After hiking back down to the truck I made my way down the mountain and back to Pitkin where I linked back up with the crew at our camp site on the Middle Quartz Creek.
That night we hit the sack pretty early because we wanted to be up at 5 and rolling by 6 so we could make it up and over Monarch and get to Saint Elmo by 8.

Dawn on Saturday morning.

We met up with Ross, aired down, and headed up the Hancock Pass road. We stopped off at the Mary Murphy Mine site and checked out the Pomeroy Lakes.

We then made our way through HEAVY traffic up and over Hancock Pass and back down, through the rain, to camp. On the way up Hancock Ryan got a flat on his 100 series. But between him, myself, and Ross we had it changed out in under 10 minutes and he was up and rolling again.

GTR report part 2:

Saturday night we hung out by the fire and shared some dinner and whiskey.

Sunday we slept in a little bit and got up and rolled out around 9ish. Dave took off and headed home to the South and Ross and James took off and headed home to the East. The rest of us headed up and over Cumberland pass into Tincup.

We headed up to Mirror Lake.

On the way up we encountered a family in a dead SxS that was having catastrophic electrical failure. We towed them up to the top but their trailer was down by Taylor Park Reservoir. Luckily there was a club of Jeep Scramblers in the area that weekend and they just happened to come up the other side as we got to the top. They agreed to tow the ScS back down to Tincup just as a large thunderstorm was moving in on us from the south.
We made our way quickly down to Saint Elmo.

I had to split right away to be able to make it down to Buena Vista by 3 to log into a video conference for my uncle’s memorial service in Texas.
I got heavy rain and lightning all the way home up 285. But luckily traffic was light and moving steadily, except for one spot just outside Buena Vista where there had been some sort of accident, which I circumnavigated around via some Forest Service Roads.

Thanks to Perry for putting this together again this year. And a big thanks for printing up what is sure to become known as the best GTR poster of all time.
I hope everyone else had a great time. I’m looking forward to next year! Maybe we can scout out some ghost towns out towards the western slope for next year. We’ll see.

Thanks again for putting this together Perry. Great time and great company too! Had a blast! On the way home. I stopped at Soul Craft Brewery in Salida only to run into a group of 8 Cruiserheads from Georgia and Alabama that had run Antero earlier in the day with Nakman. Small world around here...lol
