A much enjoyable weekend for our first outing getting down to the town of Victor, CO. Defiantly a lot to explore in that area, and there's thoughts of doing another run.
I left early Friday morning from the cabin. Excited to test out the new camera that showed up the afternoon before.
We met up Friday morning in Canyon City- Funny thing about that, as I was driving into Canyon City, I wondered why they called the town by that name. Then I started seeing stuff for the Royal Gorge.... Dan (FJCDan) Jimmy and Ryan where the first to arrive. The crew from Dave's place in Cotapaxi where a bit late to the party. With the whole group together ( 8 rigs total), we headed up the Phantom Canyon Road. This road exists today thanks to the Florence and Cripple Creek Railroad. A narrow gauge (3ft) Rail Road operating between 1893-1915. The road itself, is a easy drive through some beautiful country. As we made out way into Victor, the weather set in- Fog, rain, sleet and wind. Think it was 40'deg when we got to town.
The town of Victor is awesome. It reminded me of Black Hawk and Central City before the days of gambling. Rich with history but almost forgotten. After lunch we checked out the town then headed out to find camp. Once in Cripple Creek, we took the Shelf Road to get to a camp spot I found via Google Earth. It was fun to switch into 4wheel drive to reach camp. a spot that turned out to be a nice one- though no fires due to current bans. We enjoyed the company well into the night. Can't tell you how good it felt to be on the trail with friends.
I bugged out early Saturday knowing I had to work the next day. So hopefully the rest of the crew can chime in for that part of the trip.
Got a lot of pics, but here are a few to start.
Daniel Linn passing through one of two tunnels on the Phantom Canyon Road.
The Victor and Cripple Creek Railroad. The next day was there first day for 2020. It's a small, 2ft narrow gauge rail road.
Driving along the "Shelf Road" to camp. Fantastic views.
Paintbrushes were blooming. Yeah summer.
