A few more items checked off the list

Finally replaced the starter. I have had the replacement starter since the day I bought the truck but have been blowing it off until I left the key in the ignition on overnight recently and fried the solenoid. Oops.

I built a winch mount base bumper. Cut up a bunch of steel plate I had with a grinder and welded it together. The plan is to use it as a center section and run some tubing off similar to the design of many other 80 bumpers, but this version has a kinda crappy approach angle so it might not see any further progress. We shall see. I bolted the OE tow tabs back on for simplicity and installed a cheapo winch I have been sitting on for a few years. Better than nothing.

Amplified the speakers I installed previously. Built an amp rack to sit inside the rear quarter panel gap and a MDF sub box in the OE location. 2 x Alpine 4 channel amps running 7 total channels including the sub. I removed the dash speakers due to their poor imaging, keeping the 4 door speakers and 2 in cargo area. Sub box volume was smaller than desired at .39 cuft (mb quart says .5 cuft for a 10" in sealed box) but I added some poly fill inside the box and hoped for the best.

The second amp is sort of visable behind the first one

sound quality seems good so far, good balance and bass is punchy, without being overwhelming. The whole system is entry level product lines, keeping the cost down and easy replacement if the truck takes on some mud or water.

I actually like the sound of mudders too but I plan on going to an Interco or pitbull tire when my Coopers are done so the real road noise will start then.

I did forget to mention the fender flair delete. I like to think of it as increased aerodynamics thanks to the wheeler lake trail.😄

How would that cause that?
Not 100% sure but after recharging the battery, the starter would only crank every tenth key turn. No low voltage clicking, no sound at all from starter. At first, battery was suspected but voltage was verified and nominal. After a fairly quick starter replacement, no issues. Fired up first attempt and after.

Installed a pre amp line driver for the amplifiers in the stereo. I used y splitters initially to convert front/rear/sub rca channels to front/rear/rear/sub channels but I was having signal clipping issues when trying to set gain levels on the amps. I surmised this was due to halving the already weak pre out signal. This unit provides signal boost and has way more pre outs than I need for the application

next I replaced the 2 front seats. Original seats were non functional, cracked, missing foam and generally unpleasant. My butt hurt after the last trail run so I had to do something. I had run knockoff racing buckets previously and had good experiences so in goes a pair for now. I borrowed the 80 specific mounting bracket design from a high end seat company and made my own. Considerably less cost but way more time in install and fab work

seats are in, seat belts are functional, all good, it would seem, but the wife doesn't like em. Crap.

I finally installed the Slee 80 headlight harness I had been sitting on for 5 months. Went in easy peasy, kept the existing high beam halogens the PO had installed and trimmed tabs to fit 65w halogen 9011 lamps on the low beams. Barely squeezed in the relays near the battery

I will be taking the truck for it's first Moab trip (as far as I know) soon so I am weighing out what else I can get done before we leave. Currently working on some sliders, needing to replace suspension bushings and wanting to install the 3:1 low range tcase gear set. But due to time, might be running it as is.

I made some, much needed, maybe even a little too late, rock rails. I had previously purchased some bulk steel through the club with this project in mind and started planning. I borrowed @Stuckinthe80s bolt on early 80 series sliders for inspiration. I tack welded the main support pieces on the truck for fitment due to the 80s wonky frame design, cut it loose from the frame when it was ready and did final welding on the rails on my bench. After some cleaning and painting, final welded the rails to the truck frame.

finished product is just ok but hopefully strong enough. Thanks to @J1000 for help and use of your welder when mine bought the farm.

Edit:I will be adding a bolt on skid to go underneath the two supports below the cats on the rock rails.

Also added a CDL button since mine left japan without one.

@DomOfTheDead How much to the new rails weigh?

Awesome work! Keep on keeping on it!!

Allen
My scale hasn't been working correctly but rough estimate is 40-50lbs per side. The 1.5 dom tube added a lot of weight. I wanted to go low profile and just use the rectangle channel without the outboard tube brace but I didn't feel like it would have been strong enough without it. And the added tubing gives a foot step now.

Nice! I was curious. That's a good weight.

Haha the DOM tube added a lot of weight, but also a lot of strength! (Pun intended 😜)

Should definitely be very strong. Rocks it meets will be sorry for the encounter.

Replaced 2 exhaust mounts that looked like they had been in bad shape for a while
20211119_162348.jpg
pulled the fender flare mounting hardware, used bondo to fill the holes, grinded that down, scuffed the paint and applied Durabak emerald green roll on.

I like the color but am not sure how I feel about the texture yet, kinda sandpapery. Also, after the death of my welder, I decided not to fab a front bumper and get a ARB.
