Hey everyone, just wanted to give you an update regarding the timing of registration for Cruise Moab 2021. Because we're still dealing with a pandemic environment, the committee has made the decision to push registration as LATE as possible. We anticipate registration to open no earlier than Feb. 1st and no later than Feb. 15th.

We are monitoring local requirements for holding our event. Right now, our plan is:
  • a smaller event with fewer registration slots than normal years.
  • no event dinner on Friday night
  • no vendor night inside the Old Spanish Trail arena. (2020 was supposed to be our first year for this -- let's hope for 2022). We may be able to allow a small number of vendors to set up outside on Thursday night. We're still exploring this.
  • limited merchandise options
  • a much smaller raffle or no raffle at all
Here are the things we're still planning:
  • Awesome trail runs with great trail leaders. All the trails are still open.
  • Kokopelli overnight run
  • San Rafael Swell run led by @cruiseroutfit
  • Possibly a Lockhart Basin overnight run
  • Camping at the Old Spanish Trail Arena. We are bringing in a shower trailer in addition to porta-potties. For the 2021 event, we are strongly encouraging everyone to camp at the event HQ. We want to recapture that Cruiserhead community that comes together when everyone stays in the same place.
  • An awesome event t-shirt and a few other small items
Registration announcements
  • We'll announce registration on the Rising Sun and Wasatch forums first.
  • Our regular vendors will get an early notice too.
  • The next group to be notified will be the folks on the Cruise Moab email list. Sign up for the list here if you are not on it.
  • It's likely that registration will be full at that point. We may not do any announcements on social media this year at all. So if you rely on Facebook or Instagram for your CM news, you might want to change your plan if you really want to attend CM this year.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't those of us that were already signed up for 2020 have first dibs?
That's a good point. We'll discuss this and update with more info. The limiting factor may be size -- we had our biggest amount of people ever registered for the 2020 event, and this one is looking to be smaller.

I would like to be involved in the cruise moab committee also. Is there room for another?

Utah is currently experiencing high transmission in most counties and high COVID-19 cases. To manage risk, there is a statewide mask mandate and recommended safe gatherings are for ten or fewer. Utah is open for dining, shopping and recreation, but social distancing and other precautions are required in public.

Thanks, Ken. We are monitoring the situation and in discussion with local people who are in the loop concerning restrictions. We still believe that we will be able to hold Cruise Moab as scheduled.

Here's an update concerning Cruise Moab 2021:

First of all, you may have heard that Red Rock 4 Wheelers has canceled Easter Jeep Safari. Here's a statement from a member of their club:
EJS-2021.png

This is a situation that the Cruise Moab committee has been aware of, and we have been in active discussions with:
  • the Grand County attorney
  • the Moab Travel Council
  • Old Spanish Trail Arena
...about how to comply with the current rules and still hold our event. We have not been asked to cancel Cruise Moab, but we must comply with the 250 person limit, and everyone needs to be masked up except when they are in their vehicles or in their tents. To be clear, both the Moab Travel Council and the Old Spanish Trail Arena have encouraged us to hold our event in April as long as we comply with the rules.

Complying with the 250 person limit is way easier for us than it is for Easter Jeep Safari. They register over 1,000 participants every year, not including passengers and all the people who just show up without registering. Cruise Moab usually registers about 200 drivers every year, which put us around 400 people including passengers, family, and friends.

We have a meeting next Monday, Feb. 8, with the Moab Travel Council that is specifically for event organizers using the Old Spanish Trail Arena. After that meeting, we will assess the situation if there are any surprises, which I don't expect because we have already talked with them at length. If there are no new roadblocks, we'll plan to open registration for CM by mid-February.

If/when we do open registration, there are a few things to be aware of:

1. This will be a masked-up event. Masks will be required during registration, tech inspection, drivers meetings, and any gatherings at the Old Spanish Trail Arena. People who refuse to wear a mask will be asked to leave, and if they don't comply, the staff at the Old Spanish Trail Arena has been instructed to call law enforcement. Seriously. If wearing a mask rubs you the wrong way, don't come to the 2021 Cruise Moab -- just wait until next year when (hopefully) things will be back to normal. This is not the time or place to make a statement about socialism or the scamdemic or the liberal plot to overthrow society. The Grand County attorney has made it very clear that they intend to enforce and prosecute people who don't comply with wearing a mask, and if we aren't on the same page with them, we may lose our permit for future years.

2. The 250 person limit includes all people: drivers, passengers, children, even your buddy who just wants to hang out in the evening and ride his mountain bike all day. That means we'll be registering only about 100 trucks, which is a significant reduction from 2019 and 2020. We know some people will be disappointed this year. We apologize, but we didn't make the rules. We hope things will be back to normal for 2022.

3. There will be no vendor night, no group dinner, and no raffle. This will be a minimalist version of Cruise Moab that is mainly about wheeling trails during the day and hanging out around the campfire in very small groups at night. If you've never been to Cruise Moab, coming in 2021 will not give you the full experience. Make plans for 2022. On the other hand, we know some of you long-timers will probably love a version of Cruise Moab that is stripped down to the bones. Fair enough.

4. If you are not registering, please don't just "show up." We plan to comply with all Grand County's rules in good faith. If you are riding as a passenger in someone's vehicle, that's fine. We don't need unregistered participants as volunteers, and having 50 people show up as outlaws could jeopardize our permit for future years. If you plan to go to SE Utah at the same time no matter what, I'd just ask that you steer clear of the Old Spanish Trail Arena since that's our official HQ.

In summary:
  • Cruise Moab 2021 ain't canceled yet.
  • We'll know more after Feb. 8th.
  • If the event does happen, it will be much smaller.
  • Wearing masks at Old Spanish Trail Arena will be rigidly enforced
Finally, we're doing our best here. Feel free to comment, but just keep in mind that we are playing the cards we've been dealt and trying to make the best of the situation.

Thanks Matt and Committee for all the struggles the last two years. I appreciate the caution and even if you open up registration I will have to think carefully if I want to go as guessing the vaccine comes around end of April for us. No data just a guess. I know Ige would call me a Karen :)

It is just another chapter in the evolution of this great event for our landcruiser world. We have adapted this event many times as conditions and situations present themselves. Thank you to youse guys on the committee. It has been a pleasure to attend all of these cruise moab events and enjoy all that comes new each year.
