Do you really need to hook your clutch line up to the master cylinder with a banjo bolt, or can you just hook up a direct line?

I'm gonna venture into Cruiser territory where I have no particular knowledge... but the important thing is to not leak fluid, and transmit pushing force. If you do that, all is good.

Yes, at least on my 71. The banjo bolt threads will be different, and it won't accept the flare line! Same with my 78 FJ45 and my 76 FJ40.

Don't forget to use a new copper flat washer!

 This was about how to hook up a clutch MC. The banjo bolt is necessary in the connection to the line in my experience.

yep. and about the third time you step on the pedal, all your fluid's going to be gone, meaning you can't use your clutch.

Just for the fun of antagonization, I'm sidin' with RCH, the other non-40 owner in this thread. If it works, and doesn't leak, them what's the problem?

I don't believe there was a banjo fitting on the MC that I removed, nor did I add one when I replaced it.. it did take 3 trips to Checker to find a fitting that didn't leak but once that was resolved this setup lasted a year and a half... then is successfully drove to Texas. I have no reason to doubt this is still working fine today.
