I'm trying to get my rig ready for Montrose, and I really could use some help this week. Long story short, the EFI isn't going to work without a different head, and propane is too much $$$ right now, so my only option is to get my carb running right.

I took all the stuff off. I am in process of putting it all back on. I have studied Haynes and Chilton, don't have a FSM, but there are certain things I need help with. I am wanting to eliminate all emissions components that I can, as much vacuum lines as I can. It will not be plated, green sticker and trailer only. Problem is, I can't figure out what I can cap, what I need, and what some of these components actually are.

I can sit here and play all week, but I could really use some experienced help if anyone is willing maybe and evening this week??

Thanks

Jeremy

maybe someone knows a bit about vacuum lines?

I'm trying to figure out if it matters which two ports I can use for the distibutor?

Manuals aren't very clear...

funny how you forget the obvious...

its an 85 pickup, should be a 22r. I was halfway into an injection conversion, and figured out that a previous owner must've swapped in an older style head or engine or both, cause the manifolds are very different!

All the hard lines for vacuum, soft lines, etc are on the floor. I bolted up the manifold, set the carb on, put the fuel pump back on...

man I was THIS close to tossing it all in the dumpster! I still can't figure out why I didn't, but its a good thing since this carb is going to get me through the trails in Montrose!

Okay, that helps...a lot. My daughter had an 85 runner with 22RE, but it had a 22R block and manifolds. I had to get a long block for it. I didn't have time to do the swap itself as it was only a few days before Moab, so I farmed it out to Rising Sun member Joe Calleja at Colorado Toyota Specialists. I'm really glad I did, because he knew all the little tricks of mixing and match 22R parts with 22RE parts, including how to get the 22R manifold modified for the 22RE head. I also found out that the 22RE timing cover is a little different. He had a spare used 22RE timing chain cover that worked.

Also, there was a lot of PO-induced wrong vacuum lines and wiring under the hood; he knew what the stock arrangement was and put everything back to factory.

Since you have decided to put off the FI conversion, you'd probably be best served trying to simply put everything back to stock for now. I have the Haynes for that model, and it covers both 22R (carbed) and 22RE (EFI), and you're right, it doesn't go into great detail on emissions spaghetti. Not nearly as much as the older Haynes that covers Land Cruisers. Even then, you kind of need the the factory emissions manual to really understand all that stuff so if you do decide to modify (desmog), you know what you're doing and don't make something worse inadvertently. There are a number of things that the vacuum switching valve (VSV) controls which can't be simply unhooked and plugged off.

I suggest giving Joe a call at (303) 838-4772. He's not on this board (much) so I doubt he's seen your post, but he knows those systems better than anyone else I know. Hopefully he can point you in the right direction.
