My Dad and I hopped over to Eagle recently to snap some pics. Mostly of the Dash 8, since it's last flight is tonight (which is why I am being banished to training next month).

But I also got some cool pictures of an American A319.

Anyways.... On to the pics.

Two pics of the Dash 8 on approach.

Farewell to the Dash. It's a shame my employer had to screw it up so bad that they are parking them a few years early, and declaring bankruptcy to try and get out of paying for them. Now I get to "enjoy" a commute to the east coast.

Nice! What's the deal with the Dash's?

My employer can't hire enough pilots (because they suck at employing generally), so they are trying to "shrink to profitability" in bankruptcy, and removing the Dash's (and our ERJ-145 operation for Delta on the east coast) lets them get down to a single fleet type.

So the Dash's are getting parked first, the last one is probably at the maintenance hangar in MCI right now having company specific stuff taken out of it so that it can be returned to the owner ASAP. We had quite a petting zoo of Dash 8's parked in MCI for a while, but the day Republic declared bankruptcy the owner took the planes back as fast as they could.

Are those the same planes I see all over the place every time I go to the Caribbean

Depends.

The DeHavilland Canada (now Bombardier) Dash 8 has a few variants. From the -100 which only has 34 seats I think, and 2000 HP engines, to the Q400 (this one). 71 passenger seats, and 5000HP per side.

The stretched this design a LOT to fit 71 seats in it. I understand they are developing one with even more seats, although I certainly wouldn't want to fly it. It's obvious that it wasn't designed for this amount of stretch already.

There is also a very similar looking airplane, the ATR-42 and -72 that are common pretty much everywhere but the US. They have a LOT in common with the Dash 8 actually (I used to fly the ATR as well). Same basic engines even. But it has a more rounded nose, and the landing gear is in sponsons on the side of the fuselage.

In most ways I think the ATR was a better airplane, but the Q400 certainly is a hotrod in comparison. The ATR-72 (72 seats) only has 2700HP per side, IIRC, whereas the Q400 has 5000. The ATR never felt underpowered to me, but nearly twice the power on the same size airplane is pretty sweet.

People's Soviet Socialist Republic of California,
I've flown on plenty of Dash 8s (I think?) with Horizon Air. Best airline anywhere in the USA because they serve booze to the whole cabin 24/7. Craft beer and good wine on your short hop flight in the PNW? Yes please!

Otherwise known as "deadheading", right? I remember when my Dad drove 150 miles from the Ozarks in Arkansas to the airport in Springfield, Missouri and then flew as a passenger to New York to start his workday. He retired as a TWA 747 international captain flying out of JFK and did the deadheading thing for quite a few years. He felt similarly as you about how airlines can be some of the most mismanaged operations in the business world. He absolutely hated Carl Icahn who nickle and dimed TWA into oblivion.
The Dash is a very pretty airplane and somewhat reminds me of the old three-tailed Constellation that Dad flew soon after joining TWA in 1954. Of course, he started with the DC3.
Thanks for the pics, Dan, and taking me down memory lane! Good luck with the reboot.
