Are you snapping the photo whilst dragging racing? That air-fuel of 12 seems really rich.
I only ever drag race in my 60. Haven’t actually won any races with this 2F yet, but someday....

I was waiting for the “that looks rich!” comment haha. That’s at idle, and yes I need to get the screwdriver out and adjust the carb, I know.

@rover67 At idles I’m around 12 A:F. Under medium load it pretty much pegs at 14.75, pretty close to stoich, and at WOT it’s about 16-17. Jimmy suggest that sounded “piston-melting hot”, but the temp gauge stays put at 180. Just did 1100 miles to Utah and back and the truck loved it. Highway driving is mostly WOT with a 2F of course and I’m getting every bit of 15-15.5mpg because of how leaned out it is up there haha. Seemed counterintuitive to me though - more lean at WOT, which is when you’d expect the carb to be spitting a lot of gas into the passage. Maybe the stock Aisin carbs just flow a lot of air at WOT, maybe it flows air faster than gas. New fuel pump going in this week so we’ll see if that changes anything.

“Gee Jim, I wonder why your last catalytic converter got plugged in about 3 months??” 🤔

Yeah that's too lean, man. It's not going to show up on your temp gauge, your pistons are just going to disintegrate. Yes the cat either melted or got plugged with aluminum from your pistons. I would adjust asap! You will probably pick up a bunch of power too. It's ok to be that lean at partial throttle, but NOT at WOT.

I should clarify: at 95% WOT I’m at 16-17. If I push the gas pedal the very last little bit I can see the 2nd barrel of the carb open and I drop right back to 14.75. There’s not a lot of smoothness to this - it’s very “stepped”. But I’m learning a lot about how this carb works by seeing the A/F and vacuum gauges and throttle all work together. I think I’ll be much more informed at tuning a carb now.

And lord only knows how long this truck ran and this way....

Not today, but yesterday I replaced the vent window in the 3rd Gen that some hoodlum busted so he could break in to my car. Nothing worth stealing and no other damage than the busted window. Glass shop wanted $330 to replace it. Bought the part from Stevinson online for $36 and replaced it myself. Thank god for YouTube!

It's too lean. Just is. I'm worried about it even if you aren't. I really think you should adjust it and try to get 12:1 under WOT. Of course I'll help you swap or rebuild it if needed but let's try to avoid that... Even 14.7:1 under WOT is too lean.

Agree with you about how lean it's running but probably should clarify @Cruisertrash's observations compared to elevation (and jet size if he knows it).

A afr gauge is a great idea for tuning a carb. 16 is too lean. Probably getting away with it since a 2f has very low compression.

Installed a new Kyosan fuel pump in the 60 to get rid of PO’s aftermarket thing (which will be a functional spare). In connecting the lines I discovered that PO had plumbed the feed line from the tank to the “return” port of the pump, and the return line to the tank to the “inlet” port of the pump.

A couple of things about that .... first, for anybody wondering, yes, these fuel pumps will still deliver gas to the carb when plumbed backwards, which is hilarious to me. Second, my A/F gauge is behaving much differently now. At 95% WOT (only one carb barrel open) I’m at about 13.5 and at WOT (both carb barrels open) I’m at 14.75. So @J1000 I’m definitely not entering that hyper-lean territory anymore haha. Acceleration is very much smoother. Now to adjust the carb 🙂

Replaced the seat bottom leather in my '98 4Runner with this eBay replacement cover. Fits well, matches well enough - $104 for just the bottom piece.

Got the 4wd working again on my 4Runner, and the big brown truck dropped of a bunch of goodies from Cruiser Outfitters. Axle rebuilds f/b, as well as refreshing the brakes.

How are you liking the rock lights?? I’m looking to add some to both trucks. I like the price of those comps.
Yes!!! I love them! The procomps are really nice aluminum light bodies, but the wiring was a pain in the neck. They come as 6 pods with about 3ft of black/red wire, a basic wiring harness and a switch. No instructions, no connectors, no junction box, no anything. I called Procomp to ask if they had any recommended install instructions and they connected me to the designer directly!! His only advice was, “We sell them this way so you can install them however you want” (MmmK). So if you are comfy running extra wire to get it all connected I say go for it.

The other options I researched are more complete systems that are essentially plug and play, but I don’t like the light body’s as much. The KC lights put out great light but they are plastic body which doesn’t seam ideal for durability or water resistance. @Lefty installed those to try something different than my procomps (because they were such a pain to wire up). He did the install in like an hour. He also installed magnets on the so if a rock hits them they just pop off. Overall they seem like a good overlander solution 😏.

Baja designs also seem like a good option. Their design is similar to the procomp but the whole system is plug and play (I don’t know if the pods are aluminum or plastic). Of course you pay for it.

Since they’ve been installed just before CM I’ve learned one main thing. 6 lights are good, but 8 lights are best. I struggled with placement for a while (I’ve had them in a box since September 😅). It was either one over each wheel and one and the front and back center *or* one in front of the front wheel, one on the center of the slider and one behind the rear wheel (which is what I did, all inset and protected). Eight pods would allow you to have one directly behind the front wheel and directly in front of the rear wheel (note that it might get crowded directly behind the passenger side wheel if you have cat armor).

Bottom line is they are really great for spotters, and especially good for guys following on the trail. Extra bonus, that I think you’ve seen me mention on go.eighty, is that they serve as rad camp nightlights... that was a super cool bonus 💪 (My wife twisted her ankle and broke her kneecap at a really rocky campsite last summer... I’m sure these lights could have prevented that 😬).

I’ll be anxious to know what you decide on! As soon as you get them in let’s plan a night drive! - R

I replaced a broken motor mount in the 60. Kind of a pain, couldn't get all 3 of the bolts out of the angle bracket that attaches to the motor, as one of them was pinched behind some other bracket doodad that was hooked up to a pulley, and I didn't want to mess with belts & stuff. But I managed to get it wiggled in there by loosening the fan shroud then jacking up the engine a bit. Still runs, so I guess I did it right.

first pic shows the ratchet strap, then the ensuing repair..

Finally did some proper flex testing of the new dobinsons coils. I think I still have a bit of room on the front but the rear is sitting on the bumpstop in this photo. Pretty happy for such a low lift.
