New elk hunter in training. With about 45 days until rifle season opens it’s time to start logging in some miles with gear.

Ahh yes the sling looked funny at first but looking at it in the website it looks like… a sling. Probably the orange.

I was concerned you had maybe never seen a backpack as that was the only other shoulder strap contraption.

That have me a good chuckle :)
At first glance the actual orange shoulder pad border/outer part looked like a tubular aluminum frame that was anodized orange or something. I couldn’t think of why somebody would have made it like that.
Also like that strap for what it’s worth. I have a cheap POS on my rifle and it gets real painful after a long few days

We got out this weekend both days. Saw lots of elk on Sat nothing Sun. I ended up carrying Bridger’s rifle a lot as conditions were really slick with the melting snow. I don’t care for the sling much. It’s too wide to work well when carrying a pack. Won’t stay on your shoulder well. Without a pack it’s great. Another reason I had it more than him.

That time of year again! Hopefully everyone got the tags they wanted and are ready for hunting season!

The boy and I have both deer/elk tags in hand and looking forward to getting out. I’m trying my hand at archery for the first time this year.

We did a hard backpacking trip two weekends ago with the Boy Scouts. Bridger logged in 15 miles and 5000’ of climbing Over 3 days. I sat in camp one day to give me new knee a rest. But I’ll be ready in time.

After my White Rim trip Labor Day I got sick and didn’t hunt until this week. Had a couple of good encounters. One at 23 yards and another under 40. Couldn’t get a shot off in the scrub oak. Nor was it very easy to stalk in it. Not sure if I’ll get out again. Mornings have been better than evening. Work gets in the way.

Was able to take a smaller buck Antelope this past Saturday!

Not a bad start to the season.
Congrats, you get to start the 2022 Hunts thread with a pic :)

Got Bridger out this weekend. Had a great time but no luck. He wanted to set up camp high, 11,500’. I think the animals are down lower already.

Then we woke up to this Sunday morning and boogied out before getting snowed in.

Awesome! I’m heading down by dunes in a couple of weeks.

Interesting observation on potentially being too high at 11.5K.

My crew is debating where we should go given elevation and access.

Beautiful pictures @Corbet ! We’ve been seeing lots of animals around 10,000 ft the last few weeks here on the front range where we hunt. But also no luck with filling a tag yet.
On our game camera we’re seeing turkey, deer, elk, moose, and something that looks like a mountain lion or lynx and one bear.

I have a buck tag on my BV property, but no ELK this year. We have been hunting in the NW of CO the past few years and tags are down seems like 80% due to the winter kill. Understandable, and I'd rather let the elk recover. Probably having lower back surger/fusion this fall so might not even get to hunt depending on surgery date.
