I've read a few threads on 'Mud about using Sumo gears from Cruiser Outfitters. There might be some additional info there.

Post up if you do it!

Not yet but want to.

Would be sweet! Torque converter does a pretty good job, but there are times where I wished I was lower....especially after following Isaac on Holy Cross and watching his "doubler" in his Runner just crawl over everything.

I have had them on my 95 FZJ-80 for several years now. I also have the part time kit which is a natural while doing the low range gears.

I had Slee do the conversion. Could not be happier. Also Land Cruiser Phil here in Az did the conversion and is happy with it.

I have attached a report I wrote on the installation and picture of the hub.

Report on low-range gears and part-time kit

Report on Installation of Marks Part Time Kit and Marlin’s Low Range Gear Set on 1995 FZJ-80

I have a 1995 FZJ-80 with 167000 miles. Tires are 35 inch with stock gearing at 4:10. Speedometer is uncorrected and reads approx 10% slow due to larger tires. Both diffs have ARB Air Lockers installed. Center Diff Lock Switch had been previously installed (required for P/T Kit installation).

Installation was completed in one day by Slee Off Road in Golden, Co. Since the transfer case was out, we elected to install all new seals and bearings, completing the overhaul.
Prior to installation, I engaged low range and locked the trans in low to determine the speed at 3000 rpm. Speedo indicated 10mph at 3000 rpm. The following are the readings after Low Range install:
1st - 3000 rpm – 7mph
2nd – 3000 rpm – 14mph
3rd – 3000 rpm – 21mph
4th – 3000 rpm – 28mph

My 4:10 gears indicate 56mph at 2000 rpm on highway driving (GPS indicates 62.2mph)

Impressions –
Part Time Kit – The truck steers easier in 2wd and seems to accelerate more quickly. I suspect the milage will improve somewhat, but that mainly depends on my driving habits.
Low Range Gears – Much improved crawl capability with 4:10 gears.

I had been thinking of going to 4:88 gears, however I like the ability to go 75 mph at approx 2500 rpm with the 4:10s. For hills I can just drop down a gear and it is about what 4:88s gearing would be. My real reason to regear was for better low range (crawl) performance and this new gearset addressed the problem at much less cost. Just my preference.

I hope this helps any one thinking of doing either of these mods. Obviously, doing both while the transfer is apart is the way to go.

One more note, I cannot say enough about Christo Slee’s operation. Ben, Amory and the best tech, Joe are top notch. Good fair prices and excellent service, done right the first time!

I currently have 4.88s with the P-time kit and low range 3:1 in the T case. It's a really awesome set up for me. Slee did my install. The slow crawling ability is great especially when you have a close to 6000# rig. I usually put the trans in L when wheeling and the truck barely moves. It's really great when going down steep declines, no braking needed most of the time.

I just bought the underdrive high range gears and the low range gear. The ud gear plus a few seals was 565 and the low range gear I bought a trail gear one for 365 or something.

When you switch to the underdrive high range it will be the same things as changing the diff gears to 4.56 plus it gives you more low range reduction. I'll be excited to see how the 4.56 feels with the supercharger, I think that will be the perfect setup.

There are very detailed videos on YouTube about replacing. It all looked really easy. Im going to rebuild a spare transfer case and then just swap it in.

Im now thinking that I should do the part time kit at the same time. "Since im in there" always gets me.

Do these transfer case gears require a break in period like Diff gears? If so what is the recommendation?

I did a fluid dump at 500 miles. It was spotless. I did both high and low range gears.

I just did the high range underdrive in my 93 about 500 hundred miles ago and I am planning on doing a fluid change just to make sure there is nothing of concern. It was a good Saturday job and hopefully I'll be able to pull my pop up over monarch pass in high range this year. haha

Planning to do this soon. I keep going back and forth on the part time though.
Could one run the part time spool and just run locked in high and do the axles and hubs later?
Is going back in to do the part time a pita?
I read through some mud threads a few months ago on doing the ud gears and thought there was a bearing you have to press on and off and I believe you could have it come with a new one pressed on anybody here diy this?

I did the UD high range gears around xmas. I did need to use my press for one of the bearings and a large puller to remove something(cant remember if it was a bearing or a gear). You can borrow the needed tools if you feel like driving down to Monument to get and return them. I just watched the Otramm youtube video of it before hand and used it while I was doing the swap and it made the process pretty easy as long as you have the right tools.
