Chain Saws

I use a small mouth Nalgene bottles for bar oil. MSR bottles work OK for fuel if I’m carrying it on my back. Otherwise I have a gallon cheapo can as mixing a gallon at a time is kind of the standard procedure.

Please, please reconsider this strategy. From my time working at the poison center I have found that if you put it in a drinking container, someone will eventually drink it. Bar oil in a nalgene is no doubt safer than antifreeze in a Gatorade bottle, but still potentially dangerous.

My wife and I just found out we are going to be inheriting the vacant lot next to our house, so I'm finally going to break down and buy a chainsaw. I'll have a lot of work to do initially but then will just need one for occasional maintenance and as a truck saw. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna get the latest 16" Makita (XCU09) as I already have a bunch of Makita batteries. Anyone have any plusses or minuses on this particular saw or Makitas in general?

We've got well over 200 trees around our house here. I've been watching this because a number of the maples and oaks are going to come down to make a natural fence and gazebo. That 590 Echo, or maybe a 490, is probably going to be my next purchase. What about pole chain saws? I could see an electric or battery powered one being pretty useful for trimming.

Since doing so I’m yet to have a cap failure and spill out all over my trailer so I’m pretty sold on the container. They are covered in oily saw dust, I can’t see anyone looking at them as a desirable beverage. But I certainly get what you mean. And antifreeze in gator aid bottle is an excellent example as you can get that in any color imaginable.

Good lesson on why you don't put your saw down next to the tree you're working on I suppose.

How is it towing a trailer like that on the trail?

Not nearly as bad as you’d think. Loaded like this I have to be really careful. I added a set of Timbrens to it this year as I lost one of the OEM bumpstops a while back. That helped a lot, was inverting a left pack before. I would not want to use one for Overland personally as it’s 1325lbs empty. For hauling wood it’s perfect.

My $.02 - Stihl....peformance and easy start. Mine is gas, so no opinion on gas vs battery.

As my father used to say, “I had an accident today”. He was normally referring to a new firearm, but in my case today, I came home with a new saw. Wish I could have purchased it last summer but was not possible with business slow downs.

I ran it through a 14” ponderosa about 10 times this evening. Love it. Same weight as my old MS290 and nearly double the power. 25” bar just touches the ground without me bending over. Will make limbing easier on my back. Has the M-Tronic carb system. Looking forward to this years firewood season.

Nice. I have a firefighter buddy who loves that saw and his 35" bar. Not cheap though!

I'm glad you posted this.. its an old thread and I ended up buying an battery powered saw for offroading, camping... but I'm in need of a gas saw where I live now. These Stihls have such a great reputation.

Jake Hamilton sells them at Jax. Not sure if he’s on the forum. He has much to offer on the subject!
Jake is now an apprentice electrician and no longer at Lafayette Jax Ranch and Home. He has opinions on saws.

My local dealer just sold 10 more MS461 to the forest service down here. That is definitely the goto saw for them. It’s nearly 2 lbs heavier than this new 462. I feel like for my firewood purposes I made the right choice. I considered the new 500i as well. But $400 more for fuel injection. About a pound heavier, definitely more power. But again I’m not making a living with this thing. I’m just cutting firewood. The 462 is spoiling myself already. Can’t see needing more that this.
