Meet at the McDonalds at El Rancho at 9:00 AM. Post up below if you think you're coming and we'll wait if you are running a little late. The trailhead is just outside Empire. We'll caravan from McDonalds to the trailhead, where we'll air down, lock our hubs and have a brief driver's meeting.

This is a fairly easy trail that can be done in any stock Toyota 4x4. We should make it to the lake by lunch time, and be back on pavement by around three or four o'clock, depending on how much time we hang out at the lake.

The lake is right around timberline, so it can get fairly chilly. Expect typical unpredictable Colorado high country weather; most of the time it's just plain beautiful. Here is the link to the trip report from the 2017 run. I can't find anything from last year, but I've been leading this the day after the Rally for many years.

Bring plenty of water, lunch, warm clothing, sunscreen, etc. CB channel 4.

I didnt see this trail thread until after i started one for a last minute BM lake run this holiday weekend. I am not trying to step on any toes, just trying to go 'froading w some cool peeps. Is there any conflict of interest in a doubled up run of this trail? Or should i set up an alternative trail instead?please help this RS newb out!

@DomOfTheDead If they were on the same day then there might be an issue but since these runs are a couple weeks apart I don't see a conflict of interest. Bill Moore is a great trail, the more runs the better!

It's up to you what you want to do. I'd suggest perhaps a different trail for the date you had in mind? I was kind of surprised that someone would want to run the same trail I had posted up about back in July as soon as we had a firm date for the Rally. I've been leading Bill Moore Lake as one of our after-Rally runs for something like 15 years and it is an annual tradition. Since I work on Saturdays I seldom get to go on very many club runs, it seems people always want to go on Saturdays, so whenever I lead something I always do it on a Sunday.

Yes McDonalds has a store at El Rancho, and El Rancho Restaurant has been repurposed as a brew pub and restaurant nearby across the highway. El Rancho is the name of the locality and the highway interchange, going by memory I believe it is exit 252 (I used to memorize that when returning from Cruise Moab when looking at mile markers and thinking about how close/far I was from home). But yeah, McDonalds has Egg McMuffins, El Rancho Brew Pub doesn't ;)

I’m pretty new to this but I’d like to join. I don’t have a CB yet. But if all that’s ok, count me in.

Count me in for this one.

Jeff, can you confirm the McDonald's location, just to be safe? I'm thinking it's this one, but just want to be sure:

Went up last Saturday, the lake is still there. Test run to see how our 3 dogs like getting bounced around. Results were mixed.

Decided I'd better pass. Found a upper ball joint has some play and don't want on trail failure. 215K on rig.
Will be replacing upper & lower ball joints this week before more adventures.

HOWEVER - anybody want a passenger - text me at 804-347-3568
