Trails Open to Full Size Vehicles in Colorado

OHV PermitIn addition to the many miles of Off-Highway Vehicle trails and ‘roads open to all vehicles’, there are a number of Full Size Trails open for recreational travel in Colorado. Although these trails allow for full width vehicles, they differ from most BLM and U.S. Forest Service roads as they are designed for recreational, motorized use rather than simply for transportation. A Colorado Off-Highway Vehicle Permit is therefore required on any licensed/plated vehicle that is used for recreation on these trails. This $25.25 permit must be displayed on any full size vehicle traveling these trails even if that vehicle has a currently registered license plate from Colorado or any other state.

The funds collected from the sale of these OHV permits is used to build, maintain, and ensure the continued access to these trails for motorized and non-motorized users. A list of full size routes which hold a ‘trail’ designation in Colorado can be found in this brochure. However, it is always recommended to contact the local land management office with questions regarding any specific trail and any current closures or restrictions that may be in place.

Visit the Colorado Parks & Wildlife website to read more information on how to purchase OHV registrations and permits, and the projects that the OHV Registration program funds, call (303) 791-1920, or visit one of the OHV Registration Locations.

Finally, something definitive on the subject after how many years? While I'm not thrilled about getting an OHV sticker since I already am buying 2 every year for motorcycles, I do understand it going to a good cause, yada, yada. I'm a bit surprised to see Hancock and Tin Cup passes included since it would seem they could be easily viewed as "transportation" routes.

It said Old Tin Cup which is just a short section of Tin Cup. But wow Hancock and Tomichi passes, interesting.

The positive is that the money goes into the general fund. I wouldn't want the money to be, "used to build, maintain, and ensure the continued access to these trails for motorized and non-motorized users". ;)

I need to get out more, I've only done a few of those. Wonder why no San Juans?

San Juans are almost all National Forest which makes them "roads." Only "trails" qualify for OHV designation. Nearly everything on BLM land is listed as "trails."

Going to order now. Hopefully this money stays in keeping things open. Happy to pay if it keeps access.

ditto...wish we knew more about what the money would be used for. And annoying to have to buy 4 or 5 passes for our different vehicles. Same with parks passes. Ugh.

was anyone able to buy the license online? I went through the signup process but do not see the OHV option anywhere....

As stated it goes to a general fund. Budget PDF Like the USFS they are broke as taxes have been cut. They need money to function.

I saw it was going to the General fund. Wish we knew more about what our money would actually be used for. General fund can be used for a lot of different things.

I had the same confusion, followed links, entered information but didn't see where to purchase.

I follow the Colo. legislature's attempts to tax us to death pretty closely. When was this passed by the legislature? Who supported it? What's the penalty for not having a tag?

Although these trails allow for full width vehicles, they differ from most BLM and U.S. Forest Service roads as they are designed for recreational, motorized use rather than simply for transportation.

This is completely arbitrary. Who really needs to go over Mosquito Pass for anything other than recreation? Why not add EVERY offroad trail in Colorado?

I'm annoyed by this, especially after the DOW and Parks Service combined and made no useful changes to ensure solvency. I feel like I'm living in Taxachusetts again.

And of course, I have 3 different trucks I occasionally take offroad.....

Edit: Looks like it has been around, but maybe is just now being enforced: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/colorado-ohv-permit-requirements.170137/

Yeah, it's been around a while, and was misunderstood initially even by state officials. I emailed the Co State Parks "dude" up in FoCo with some amateur (engineer) legal interpretation of the new rule. In the USFS, the "roads" are actually defined federally to be "forest highway" and that vehicles designed for highway use are legal. The benefit of the original post here is to clarify/list which routes are actually designated as "trails" and not "roads". Only "trails" need the OHV sticker on an otherwise legal highway vehicle.

Here's the local multi-page thread on the topic:

Has anyone been able to get this OHV sticker online through the CPW? For their truck?

I thought I'd be able to buy it along with my hunting license (same site), but so far I have not seen it on the web site.

You can renew online but if you've never had one you have to go in and buy one. Motorcycle shops, etc.

The form seemed to be for registering your OHV...I didn't think a licensed on road vehicle needed to do the registration.

Ige...did you submit the registration form to get a sticker for your 80 series? I didn't even see a spot for a licensed on-road vehicle...only motorbikes, snowmobiles, etc.
